OK, here's my two cents now that I have experienced both. The Montana State Championship had both. Why? I don't know. I do like the ring of fire because it does involve everyone and it gives the people that are out of contention for $ or schwag a chance to get something. The only problem with it is it usually goes for way too long. We did a final nine here for top 10 in Int. Ams (2 flights of 5), Ad. Ams (2 flights of 5), Open Masters (1 flight of 5), and finally Open Men (2 flights of 5). It was great to get to watch the top 5 guys compete but the way they were flighted out was crap, it took way too long. Each flight should have been designated a hole to start on, told what holes to play, and been sent out. Here they started all flights from the same hole which took 45min. to an hour to get the last flight going. The day could have ended a lot sooner and everyone could have still seen what they wanted, and that is to watch the Open Men in the final nine, if they had been assigned holes. Lets face it nobody was gonna watch the other groups except for friends, family, or spouses of those players. I skipped watching my buddy win Ad. Ams to watch the open men.

BTW, there was a 3-way tie after the final nine so they played on. It took three holes for one of them to drop off and after the 4th hole Christian Deitrich drained a 25+ foot straddle putt from inside a tree to bird the last playoff hole and win it. It was sweet. I laid and egg on my home courses and walked away empty handed. I had a rough three rounds. A lot of non-locals beat me. I was very disappointed with my play but it was a sweet tournament, well run too. Nothing but a bunch of disc golf freaks up here, there are some guys that are crazy good.
