I was looking at some disc golf videos on youtube the other day and ran across this one. He is going over whats in his bag and I personally think its kinda ridiculous how much plastic he is dragging around when he is playing.

And I thought I carry too much plastic. What's he do, throw a different disc for every shot?

I see the "what's in your bag" threads on PDGA. Most of the posts say they carry something like 20+ discs. That just seems like way too much plastic.

Then again, I'm no pro, so what do I know?

I agree you are no pro, but I also only carry about 12 discs and 3 of them are the same putter.

The Star TL is pretty much only for tailwind drives. I'm thinking of taking the Champ Destroyer out of the bag. At Bengal lately, I've pretty much only been throwing the Xcals (drives on 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 16, 18/), Orc (drives on 1, 3, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 17), Cro (for hole 6 drive only), Champ Roc (drive on 12), Aviar and Rhyno (forehand approaches and drive on 15).

Weren't Turboputt discs deemed illegal by the PDGA as of the first of this year? Or at least, they're not an "approved" disc any longer.

Eric I am pretty sure they are not approved. This is why Austin only carries it occasionally. I don't think he ever throws it in a tournament. I could be wrong.

You guys are correct the Turbo putt is no longer PDGA approved for tournament play.

Blake - I think they tweeked their manufacturing specs to require a smooth outside edge.

Honestly, I read through the manufacturer's specs and couldn't figure out why it's not approved. The first section dealing with disc dimensions talks about no perforations in the flight plate, but then goes on to define the flight plate as the area inside the rim of the disc. The turboputt has the "teeth" outside of the flight plate, according to this definition.

Anyone clarify?

From what I read it has to do with the underside rim of the turbo putt that is why it is nolonger legal but I could be wrong

You are all correct. I only carry a Turboputt for novelty events and as a conversation starter. I never carry it in a PDGA sanctioned event.

As far as why it is illegal, the PDGA exists to standardize the game such that all competitors are on a level playing feild. When Quest invented the Turboputt, it oushed the limits of specifications to the edge. The scalloped edge, combined with the swirl on the underside are, I believe, outside of the specification limits.

Basically, Quest invents discs to challenge the PDGA specs. On a side note, ROB'S has got some new Quest stuff in, including a couple of Turboputts.

Here is the official PDGA spec:

(6) have a flight plate that does not exceed 0.5 cm in thickness, including any raised features such as
lettering, ridges, nipples, and other thickened parts. Discs with a thickened section atop or underneath
the flight plate, however, may increase to 1.0 cm in flight plate thickness in this section only, provided
that this section:
(i) is circular in outline;
(ii) is between 5 and 10 cm in diameter for an area with a uniform thickness that is centered on
the center point of the disc; and
(iii) gradually thins at the outer edge at a slope that averages no more than 50% (or 22.5 degrees)
relative to the surrounding part of the flight plate. No part of the underside of the flight plate
may be closer than 0.5 cm to the plane defined by the bottom of the rim.
(7) have a smooth surface on the bottom part of the rim; that is, a surface free of any irregularities such
as protrusions or depressions. When placed on a flat surface, the rim must have no discernible gaps
between itself and the surface on which it is resting.

Because the Turboputt has that raised spiral underneath, it is not legal
